With Winter almost upon us, it’s a good time to look back at the Winter Stakes feature race run over the longer distance in Launceston since 1967. The winner in 2012 was the Butch Deverell prepared, Jethro, who won 25 career races including eight on the Launceston track.
Jethro
He won races from 452m up to 720m including multiple races at Victoria’s premier tracks with a highlight being the Group 1 Hume Cup victory at The Meadows. His first feature win came in Launceston and was the Gold Cup final where he was an emphatic eight and a half-length winner.

Jethro won over $188,000 in prizemoney and was part of a hugely successful litter that won well over half a million dollars. At his first start over the staying trip he was a feature winner taking out the Winter Stakes for 2012 upstaging litter sister, Bell Haven in the process.
