Tasmanian sport lost an icon this week with the passing of Shane Yates.
Most recently known for his talents as a race caller, Shane first developed his skills at a younger age when he was a sports caller that occasionally dabbled in the races.
Shane was also an outstanding sportsman, as a footballer he was highly rated and could have played VFL but for a serious knee injury that curtailed his career.
Shane loved the Devonport Football Club, becoming a long serving president and helping the club through several difficult times.
He invariably called either the greyhound, harness and thoroughbred meetings on his beloved north west coast.
In the past year Shane battled through his own poor health to continue to call the sport he loved, returning to the box at the Devonport Showgrounds. His efforts are sure to have been greatly appreciated by everyone in the Tasmanian racing community.
Shane will long be remembered in Tasmanian racing, highly respected by all Tasmanian sports fans and will be sadly missed.
