In Brief

  • Exciting Amy Cora back in action Thursday.
  • Trainer hopeful the break hasn't effected the young star.
  • Many chances for Cannan through the night.

Trainer Debbie Cannan has been patiently waiting for the return of racing and there are few greyhounds she’s keener to see back more than Amy Cora.

By the time the coronavirus pandemic brought Tasmanian racing to halt at the end of March, Amy Cora had enhanced her status as one of the most promising pups down south.

The daughter of Barcia Bale out of Pearl’s Legacy put three on end in Launceston, with her latest coming in a scintillating 29.48 at the track.

On Thursday night she will line up beside kennelmate Whiskey River in the $2010-to-the-winner In Memory Of Shane Yates (461m).

“She went very well at her last start at Launceston and then we had the big shutdown,” Cannan said.

“Three months in a dog’s career can be a lot so all you hope for is that they don’t come back with injuries or anything else.

“She is only young, and she was pretty much going beautifully before we stopped so you don’t put too much pressure on her.

“She is only a baby and all you can hope for is she gets back to where she was.”

Amy Cora is a winner of nine of her 12 starts and has drawn box four on Thursday night while Whiskey River has drawn one.

Cannan sent Whiskey River for a break just before the shutdown but says he’s fit for his return to racing.

Like everyone Cannan has been patiently waiting for the return to racing with plenty of young greyhounds in her yard yearning to continue their careers on the track.

“We are just rapt to be going back around,” Cannan said.

“You just have to deal with it don’t you at the end of the day. For the first couple of weeks I let my dogs have a break.

“I brought some day beds for their yards and they laid out in the sun every afternoon.

“Apart from that I didn’t want to work the dogs too hard.

“As it turned out we were out for the initial four weeks and then it went a bit longer than we thought so you are trying to do your best.”

Cannan has a strong hand across the card with Siberia (race one), Judah Ben Hur (three), Canvas (seven), Kintrye (seven) and Granola (eight).

“I would say all of mine are a little bit underdone and I would have liked to have another trial or two,” Cannan said.

“We trialled them as much as we could given the time and you just have to adapt to that. Everyone is in the same boat.

“We just need to look forward now.”
