In Brief
- Littermates are chasing maiden wins.
- 10-race card commences at 12:00.
- Box draw completed for Monday’s Illingworth Classic.
Longford trainer David Crosswell will be hoping litter mates Highland Fame, and Quick Joey Small will be able to break their maiden status when they line up in Devonport on Tuesday afternoon.
Highland Fame lines up in the second race on the card, the Surepick Juvenile Maiden over 452 metres.
The chaser has only had three starts and was placed in his first two outings which were both in Hobart over the 461 metres, including a second placing when defeated a half-length by kennel and littermate Highland Wonder in 26.09s on 23 July (race pictured) with two subsequent winners coming out of that event.
At his most recent outing, Highland Fame was defeated 7 3/4 lengths behind Vintage Fame in 26.01 or 25.46s over the 452 metres in Devonport last week where the greyhound copped a few bumps before being galloped on around the final corner.
“He was a bit unlucky last start when he was in second spot, and a dog got on the back of him on the corner,” explained his hall of fame trainer David Crosswell.
On Tuesday, Highland Fame will start from box three and has been installed the short price favourite in early markets.
“It looks a bit weaker field (than last start), and I think he will just lead and nearly win,” said the owner-trainer.
The other representative from the Crosswell kennel is Quick Joey Small in the third race of the day, the Ulverstone Pet Foods Grade 6 also over 452 metres.
Quick Joey Small has been placed in four of his five starts to date.
The only time he has missed a place was two starts ago when fourth behind Siberia in the Hobart Breeders Classic Final before finishing third behind the same greyhound in Launceston on 27 July when defeated 4 1/4 lengths in 30.01s.
“He has been a bit unlucky so far, and he is a bit erratic for the first 100 metres in his races which doesn’t help,” said Crosswell.
“If he doesn’t run into anything or find trouble early, he is a very fast dog,” added the trainer.
Crosswell has respect in the race for the Ben Englund-trained debutante Wynburn Sheean, who is also a littermate to Crosswell’s two runners today.
“I believe his brother in the red box can gallop a little bit,” said Croswell.
The litter is by Aston Dee Bee out of She’s All Class who won 21 of her 39 starts including the 2013 Tasmanian Oaks and the 2013 State Sprint Final of the National Championship.
Today’s 10-event card commences at 12:00 and will be televised on TasracingTV and Sky Racing 1.
Monday night in Launceston two heats of the prestigious Ladbrokes Illingworth Classic were held over the 515-metre journey.
Winklee Casey from the Edward Howard kennel won the first heat in 29.92s while the Ben Englund-trained Wynburn Lethal continued on her winning way in the second heat recording a time of 29.70s.
The box draw for Monday’s final was conducted last night.
