The top two three-year-olds of the 2019/20 season were both in action in Devonport on Wednesday, each continuing preparations for a return to the races.
The Bill Ryan-trained Still A Star had her third trial this campaign when stepping out over 1150m in the second heat of the day.
Scott Brunton had a quartet of runners scratched from the trial which left just two horses and expectedly the daughter of Toronado made light work of Brockton Punch, a 54-rater trained by Vern Poke.
This was the final hit-out for Still A Star before her first-up assignment which is expected to be at Caulfield next Saturday, with Ryan announcing last week that champion jockey Damian Oliver has been booked for the ride.
Still A Star was one of three Tasmanian trained horses among the 182 nominations announced on Tuesday for this year’s Cox Plate, along with Mystic Journey and Mandela Effect.
Still A Star’s main rival for the title of three-year-old of the season will be the Leanne Gaffney-trained Deroche who beat home a pair of stablemates in an unofficial jump-out (listed as trial 7 on the Tasracing website).
The winner of the Group 3 Vamos Stakes back in February defeated five-year-old mare Kwai, with 2020 Ladbrokes Devonport Cup winner Newhart a closing third.
