In Brief
- Smart mare returns from a spell in Devonport.
- Gee Gee Secondover the likely favourite.
- Apprentice Peter Lui returns to the saddle.
The record Remember this was a hit for Aussie crooner Frank Ifield in the early 1960s and the horse may well be music to punters ears late Sunday afternoon in Devonport.
I Remember You surged to the top of the charts in both Australia and England for Ifield in 1962, holding down the number one spot for seven weeks in the UK.
The equine version has been on song since joining the Scott Brunton stable in early 2019.
Hailing from Queensland originally, I Remember You won her first two Tasmanian starts and then ran a game second in the Group 3 Vamos Stakes on Launceston Cup Day 2019.
Her next run was in Melbourne where she won at Sandown.
I Remember You has had just eight starts for Brunton, winning three and missing a cheque only once, she resumes on Sunday in the Kevin Sharkie Hcp (1150m). The mare hasn’t started since running a close fourth in this year’s Vamos Stakes, but she tuned up for her return to racing with an impressive trial win in Hobart recently, skipping home the last 600m in 34.75 seconds winning hard held.
I Remember You has drawn awkwardly in barrier nine in a field of 10 meaning a good ride from Bulent Muhcu will be instrumental.
Her main danger looks to be Gee Gee Secondover who returns home after running an unlucky fifth, beaten 1.6 lengths over 1000m at Flemington last month.
“He went straight to the boys at Devonport when he came back and has done really well,” said training patriarch Leon Wells.
“He had some bad luck in Melbourne, he was looking for a running rail and probably should have won.
“He had a good hit out last Saturday morning and they will certainly know he’s about.”
Wells is also delighted to have stable apprentice Peter Lui back riding on Sunday.
‘It’s been a long time; he broke a bone just above the ankle and it just wouldn’t heal. He’s been riding trackwork and rode at the trials this week, it’s great to have him back, he rides well,” said Leon Wells.
The eager youngster hasn’t ridden since 20 March, but he showed he hasn’t lost form while sidelined winning three of the four trials he rode in on Wednesday.
It’s an early start on Sunday with the first of 10 races at 10:40. All races will be shown on Sky Racing 1 and TasracingTV.
