Paul and Elizabeth Geard have been breeding thoroughbreds for many years but this could be their best season for producing two-year-old winners.
In Launceston on Wednesday night they had three runners in each of the two divisions of the 2YO Maiden Plate.
They emerged with one winner and two minor placegetters and the remaining three youngsters acquitted themselves well without figuring in the money.
But none were as impressive as Geegees Hawkeye that settles midfield one-off with cover and travelled well to the 500-metre mark where rider David Pires eased him three-wide to make his charge at the leaders.
The gelded son of Wordsmith-Dreambird (x Bluebird) forged clear and went on to win comfortably from race favourite Full Magnum with Mum Brought A Horse a close-up third.
Full Magnum was well backed and rider Craig Newitt opted to send the gelded son of Magnum around the field early to take up the running while first-starter Assassin Le Beau over raced outside of the leader.
Geegees Hawkey’s trainer John Luttrell said the gelding had shown above average ability from day one.
“This horse broke in well and the first time he galloped I thought he had a bit of a future,” Luttrell said.
“But there is still at least a couple at home that haven’t been named that go a lot better,” he said.
