LAST season’s best three-year-old Admiral will be aimed at the feature weight-for-age races as well as the state’s richest and most prestigious sprint the Newmarket Handicap.
Admiral’s trainer Barry Campbell confirmed his stable star would make his return to racing in the Newmarket over 1200m on November 18 and then focus on all the weight-for-age races including the Conquering (1200m), Thomas Lyons (1400m) and George Adams (1600m), all of which carry prizemoney of $100,000 and are Listed events.
“The horse has come back as well as we expected and everything is ticking along nicely as we head towards the Newmarket,” Campbell said.
“Obviously the weight-for-age races will be his prime targets in Tassie but we could have other options along the way,” he said.
Admiral won six of his seven starts as a two-year-old that earned him the best of that age title and last season he only started six times for three wins, two seconds and a gallant fifth in the $500,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington prior to him being sent for a spell.
He was second in the Thomas Lyons to Streetwise Savoir in Hobart and he was second first-up in the 3YO Cup to Valiant Warrior in Launceston.
But he made amends with wins in the $25,000 3YO Trophy (1400m), $100,000 Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) and the $100,000 George Adams (1600m).
