TASMANIA’S star four-year-old galloper Admiral’s next start will be in Melbourne and act as a warm-up for the next month’s $500,000 Group 1 Goodwood Handicap over 1200 metres at Morphettville in South Australia.
Admiral’s Spreyton-based trainer Barry Campbell yesterday confirmed plans to take his stable star to Melbourne for a race at Flemington over 1000 metres on May 07 and then head to Adelaide for the Goodwood a fortnight later.
Admiral was Tasmania’s leading two and three-year-old and so far this season he has won five of his six starts with all of the wins at weight-for-age varying in distances from 1200 to 1600 metres.
Campbell sent Admiral for a well-earned break the day after he won his second successive $100,000 George Adams Plate (1600m) on Launceston Cup day.
“We’ve decided to definitely head to Adelaide for the Goodwood Handicap and instead of giving him a trial here in Tassie we’ll take him to Melbourne for a 1000-metre race up the straight at Flemington two weeks before the Adelaide race,” Campbell said.
“The horse has been back at my stables for well over a month and he’s doing everything expected of him.”
“The 1000-metre run at Flemington will virtually serve as a trial although that’s not to say he can’t win but I expect it to have him just where I want him for the Goodwood,” he said
