VICTORIAN apprentice Boris Thornton ended his time in Tasmania with a winner aboard the Adam Trinder-trained Appassionata in a 2YO and upwards maiden over 1150m at Spreyton today.
Thornton allowed Appassionata to settled beyond midfield and then let her loose at the 400-metre peg and she rattled home to score by a neck from the favourite Blaze Forth with Rusty Barrel almost a length astern.
Appassionata had been placed at two of her previous three starts and was overdue for a win.
Thornton had his indentures transferred to Trinder with the hope of riding out his claim during the winter months but he confirmed today that he would be returning home on Friday with no likelihood of him returning in the very near future.
The talented rider has ridden 29 winners in Tasmania this season to sit fifth on the overall rider’s premiership table and is second in the race for the apprentice’s title behind Ismail Toker who has ridden 44.
