BARNES BAY has been threatening to do something brilliant for some time and in Hobart last night (Thursday) he delivered the goods.

The David Polley-trained dog powered home to take out the Mercury Free For All over 461 metres coming from well back to comfortably defeat a strong field of sprinters.

Barnes Bay was slow to begin from box three while expected leaders Arome Peche (4) and Shanlyn Vapour (7) shared the front heading to the top turn with Rockvel (1) camped on their heels.

Barnes Bay steadily weaved his way through the field to be within striking distance turning for home and just when the race caller was about to announce Aroma Peche the winner BarnesĀ  Bay put in the big strides.

He wasn’t going to win 50 metres from home but so fast did he finish that he hit the line almost a ;length clear of Aroma Peche with Shanlyn Vapour a half-length astern.

Barnes Bay (Talk’s Cheap-Wooreddy) was bred by prominent breeder Barry Heawood and is raced by the Island Syndicate that is managed by Heawood.

The dog had won nine of his 34 starts heading into this latest assignment but it was arguably the dog’s best triumph.

Barnes Bay’s record now stands at 10 wins and 15 minor placings from 35 starts for $20,000 in stakes.
