STAR Tasmanian pacer Beautide had his colours lowered when he finished out of the placings in the Group 1 Victoria Cup at Melton in Victoria last night.

Beautide battled on gamely to finish eighth but a veterinary examination of the gelding after the race revealed he may have had an irregularity with his respiratory system so he has been stood down from racing until further notice which may impact on him defending his Inter Dominion crown next month.

The reigning Inter-Dominion champion was having his first start since finishing second to Christen Me in the Miracle Mile in November.

With trainer James Rattray aboard he began well from gate three but could not match the speed of Christen Me that powered across from gate six to easily find the lead.

Instead of taking the trail behind the leader Rattray popped off the fence to the one-out line and eventually secured the one-out-two-back position.

Not wanting to become pocketed, Rattray eased out to lead the three-wide train but it was obvious at the top of the straight that the Tasmanian had endured too tough a run to be in the finish.

The race was won by Christen Me that gave his rivals a pacing lesson and he has now firmed as favourite to win the Inter Dominion.
