STAR Tasmanian staying greyhound Bell Haven flashed home to finish a close-up second to Victorian Destini Fireball in the Group 1 Gold Cup final over 710 metres at Albion Park in Brisbane tonight.

The Ted Medhurst-trained bitch was backed in to start the $3.30 favourite but she gave away a huge start, spotting the leaders 15 lengths in the back straight the last time.

But The Tasmanian-owned and bred bitch rattled home to miss by less than a length.

Destini Fireball went into the Gold Cup series on the back of a fifth to Irma Bale in the Group 1 Sandown Cup over 715m in which Bell Haven was second beaten, a half-head.

Irma Bale led the Gold Cup final field to the home turn but she was swamped by Destini Fireball and young inexperienced bitch Mrs. Thursday.

Destini Fireball hit the front close to home and held on to defeat Bell Haven with Mrs. Thursday a close-up third.
