STAR Tasmanian greyhound Bell Haven went within a breath of capturing one of the nation’s most prestigious events in Victoria last week.
The Ted Medhurst-trained rattled home to finish second to Irma Basle in the $177,000 Sandown Cup last Thursday night with champion stayer Miata a close-up third.
While the talented bitch didn’t win she would definitely have increased her fan base.
It was an unbelievable performance with Bell Haven at least 10 lengths off the eventual winner heading down the back stretch the last time and in a seemingly hopeless position to run a place let alone win the race.
But she unleashed an incredible finish and hit the line a nose short of capturing her greatest win.
Miata was retired after the race and will now embark on a career as a broodbitch.
Bell Haven has been competing at the highest level interstate for much of this year and has taken her career record to 23 wins from 53 starts for $224,400 in stakes.
