HOBART based harness racing owner-trainer Kerrie Edwards only races the horses he breeds himself these days and one that could make him a regular visitor to the winner’s circle this season is Birdies Best that scored an impressive win in Hobart last Monday night.

Birdies Best (x Village Jasper) was bred by Edwards from his good producing broodmare Lost Jewels.

Driver James Austin urged the three-year-old from the gates to make the most of his near inside front-row draw and the gelding had n trouble holding the lead.

Austin rated his charge superbly and when he asked for the supreme effort in the home straight he gave enough to stave off a later and determined challenge from eventual runner-up Brookefield Lad (Todd Rattray).

Edwards said Birdies Best had taken time to mature but had shown enough in recent outings to suggest a win was in the offing.

“He’s been racing well without any luck with barrier draws and tonight he was able to use his gate speed and that was probably the most pleasing aspect of the win,” Edwards said.

Birdies Best has had nine starts this season for last Monday night’s win and six minor placings so he has well and truly covered expenses.
