FORMER Tasmanian Derby winner Gee Gees Blackflash will be aimed at upcoming weight-for-age races as his prime lead-ups to the major Cups in February.
Gee Gees Blackflash scored an upset win in the Newmarket handicap over 1200 metres at The TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston last week but the win came as no surprise to his trainer.
“This horse is absolutely brilliant and capable of winning any race on his day,” Luttrell said.
”His trackwork leading up to the Newmarket was exceptional and his trackwork rider Russell Revell all but declared him.”
“Top jockey Stephen Maskiell rode him in a trial just before the Newmarket and he said the horse felt enormous and predicted he would be hard to beat in the Newmarket.”
“I was going to tip him out but he pulled up so well from the Newmarket I’ll head him to the weight-for-age race over 1400 metres in Launceston next Wednesday week and there’s another weight-for-age race over 1600 metres (Tasmania Stakes) in Hobart at the end of the month,” he said.
He also suggested his stable star might contest the Summer Cup over 2100 metres in Hobart as his final lead-up to the $225,000 Group 3 AAMI Hobart.
The Summer Cup is a quality handicap with a weight ceiling of 60kg which could ensure Gee Gees Blackflash is not too disadvantaged.
Meanwhile Luttrell is hoping his two-year-old filly Gee Gee Showgirl (Show A Heart-Gold Digger) can win on debut at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on Sunday.
He also is keen on the winning chances of Krakeour in the open handicap (race 7).
