URANA GALORE gave Old Beach-based greyhound trainer Jared Davies an overdue win but at the expense of most punters at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart last night.
Urana Galore emerged triumphant in the feature race on the card, the M. A Morgan Stakes over 461 metres but he was one of the outsiders of the field.
The dog paid $25.60 on The TOTE with only one other runner at longer odds.
One of the favourites Pipstar began well from box five to lead while Shantytown Lad (8) raced at her outside to the home turn with Urana Galore in third spot to the home turn.
Shantytown Lad switched back to the inside at the top of the home straight and looked set to run past Pipstar while Urana Galore looked to be baulked for a run.
But Davies’ dog persevered with the rails run and when the gap appeared he barged through and went on to score by a half-length from Shantytown Lad with Pipstar a close-up third.
The favourite Good Odds Demon ($3.40) got in to all sorts of trouble back in the field and was never in the hunt while the well-backed Barnes Bay was slowly away from box one after which he was never out of trouble.
Urana Galore (Bit Chili-Diamond Thor) had not won a race since December last year so it was definitely an overdue victory for both dog and trainer.
