PROMINENT North-West Coast owner-breeder Angela Brakey celebrated her first win as a trainer when Neil’s Gold stormed home to win the Midway Tavern Maiden/Class 1 Handicap over 1600 metres at Tattersall’s Park today.

Neil’s Gold was given the run of the race by heavyweight jockey Michael Guthrie who settled the five-year-old gelding third on the fence.

Neil’s Gold traveled superbly to the home turn where Guthrie eased his charge off heels to challenge and pit the end result beyond doubt 200 metres out.

The well-backed favourite Winay Wayna (Ronan Keogh) also traveled well in fourth place and when she was eased out to make her charge she suffered severe interference and lost valuable ground.

Stewards opened an inquiry into why apprentice Bulent Muhcu allowed his mount Seal The Plan that raced outside of the leader, to drift out noticeably nearing and on the home turn that caused interference to Winay Wayna.
