IF the Ted Medhurst-trained dog Buckle Up Wes had have endured the luck at the start which paved the way for his win in the Tattsbet Hobart Thousand consolation he would certainly have made it to the Group 1 final on Thursday night.
That is the clear outcome from the dog’s effortless win in the Bob Brown Memorial (Hobart Thousand Consolation) over 461 metres at Tattersall’s Park on Thursday night.
Buckle Up Wes began well from box two to settle outside of Black Rip (1) and they matched motors to the home turn with Varcoe (3) camped on their heels and poised to pounce.
But when Buckle Up Wes slipped into another gear he sped clear and went on to win decisively from Black Rip with Varcoe third and just in advance of Pinto Pronto.
Medhurst has always believed Buckle Up Wes was good enough to match it with the best on the national stage and he reaffirmed those feelings after the race.
