HARNESS Racing mentor Dick Eaves was once one of Tasmania’s shining lights in the training ranks but in recent years the talented horseman has made only infrequent visits to the winner’s circle.
But at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart last Sunday night he was back with a vengeance snaring a double with horses that gave the impression they will win again.
Eaves prepared the Bill and Tamra Fawdry-owned Silver Tail Lass to win a race for three-year-old and older non-winners over 2090 metres and soon he after watched his five-year-old Buddy Beauty score an impressive win in the Anthology Pace for C2 class pacers also over 2090 metres.
Buddy Beauty is owned and raced by the trainer and his wife Maggie and it was the gelding’s first win from four starts this season and his first since May.
Buddy Beauty made the most of the inside front row draw but driver Ricky Duggan had to use the gelding up early to retain the lead owing to pressure from Levina Leis that tried valiantly to secure the front position for the first 300 metres.
Duggan then rated Buddy Beauty superbly and the gelding had enough in reserve at the business end of the race to stave off all challengers.
