SPREYTON trainer Barry Campbell walked away from Tattersall’s Park on Sunday with a double and confident both horses can repeat the dose in the coming weeks.
Campbell saddled up Manchero ($21.40) to win the Class one Kilkenny Handicap over 1100 metres at what was the gelding’s third run back from a spell and in the following race smart three-year-old Just Call Me Fred scored an emphatic win in a class two handicap over 1400 metres.
He also had the well-backed Lampo ($8.10) engaged in Manchero’s race and the gelding ran gamely to finish third carrying top weight of 58 kilograms.
Manchero is only lightly raced with this latest outing his seventh.
He was well ridden by Victorian apprentice Boris Thornton (claims 3kg) who allowed the Kaphero gelding to roll to the front and save him for a dash up the home straight.
His other winner was Just Call Me Fred that carried top weight of 59 kilograms but made light work of the task by forging to the lead at the top of the straight and then staved off all challenges over the final 200 metres to emerge victorious by 1-1/2 lengths.
It was an outstanding effort from Just Call Me Fred (Dash For Cash-Gelignite Speed) that was bred by Alwyn Shaw from Aceland Stud.
The gelding was sold at a dispersal sale at Aceland just over a year ago.
