HALL OF FAME thoroughbred trainer Barry Campbell produced his first two-year-old winner for the season when first-starter Chillout scored an emphatic win in The Boathouse 2YO Maiden over 1100 metres.
The bonus for Campbell was his other two runners In Bloom and Gemini filled the minor placings to make up the trifecta.
“Chillout has shown ability from day one but he has been a late maturer so it’s a bonus for him to win at two,” Campbell said.
“He is a graduate of the Scone Yearling Sale and I don’t think Denise (Denise Martin of Star Thoroughbreds) paid a lot for him.
“I thought the run of In Bloom was terrific coming from well back to run second and I have no doubt Gemini will develop into a very smart filly.
Chillout (Artie Schiller-Sparks Are Flying) was allowed to bowl to the front by stable apprentice Raquel Clark and despite being attacked for the lead from the 700-metre peg to the home turn the gelding shrugged off the challenges and sped clear to go on and score by almost three lengths.
“He’s a very nice horse that has come on in leaps and bounds this prep,” Clark said.
“He has had a few cheeky moments on the training track early on but he is getting better all the time and I’m sure he has a bright future,” she said.
