TRAINER Debbie Cannan will be out to emulate the feats of top Victorian trainer Darren McDonald in tonight’s Group 2 Launceston Cup final over 515 metres at The TOTE Racing centre.

McDonald snared the Devonport-Launceston Cup double last year with Gardam Prince and tonight Cannan will be hopping her kennel star St Pierre can mirror that feat.

St Pierre scored an impressive win in the Devonport Cup and followed up with a scintillating Launceston Cup heat win last week.

St Pierre won his heat by 11 lengths and clocked a slick 29.86s which was just outside his personal best of 29.76s that he set in August.

St Pierre is racing in carer best form and provided he begins as well as he did in the heat he will be very hard to beat.

Interstate invader Drill Bit showed exceptional early speed to win his heat carrying the white vest and his time of 25.79 was the quickest of the eight heat winners.

The Ray Henness-trained dog will start from box four tonight but he only has to mirror his heat to be a major contender.

Posh Di (2) proved her class when she gave Regent Typhoon a six-length start but hauled him in to win her heat by a length in a time of 29.90s, so she will go into the race with a big chance of earning her owners the major share of the prize money.

The Mick Stringer-trained banger Harvey also was an impressive heat winner but box eight has done him no favours.

Darren McDonald has Magpie Lomar in the final and while he is drawn awkwardly he must rate highly given his recent race record.

The Country Club Tasmania Launceston Cup is race eight on the 10-event card and is scheduled to start at 9.38pm.
