In a joint statement, representatives from Harness Racing Australia, Harness Racing New Zealand and the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club today provided an industry update with regards to the 2011 Christchurch Casino Inter Dominion and Australasian Young Drivers Championship in the wake of the tragic events continuing to unfold in Christchurch.
Addington Raceway has sustained some damage to its track and facilities but has emerged relatively well from Tuesdays aftershock. ‘While Structural Engineers are yet to inspect the facility, it is expected that the track and facilities will be back up and fully operational well in time for the 2011 Christchurch Inter Dominion which is due to start on 25 March.
Officials are closely monitoring the state of infrastructure and associated facilities within the City of Christchurch and its ability to host visitors and stage a major event such as the Inter Dominion so soon after the recent earthquake.
These issues are continuing to be closely monitored, while a host of contingency options are considered in order to provide the best outcome for the event. However, at this stage, no decision has been made with respect to changing the original schedule.
An announcement is expected early next week once more information is available and officials have a better understanding and outlook on Christchurch’s infrastructure issues.
