JAKCORIJIM looked in need of the run but the gallant grey’s liking for the synthetic surface at Spreyton prevailed in a benchmark 82 handicap over 1350 metres today.
Jakcorjim’s trainer Glenn Stevenson even told the owners that in his opinion the gelding would run well but was probably was not a betting proposition.
But when the pace was hot and with Ulucinar determined to ride to instructions and have Jakcorijim positions well off the speed the race unfolded like a scene from the Pharlap movie.
Lander Doller and Makes Cents set a cracking pace while Ulucinar was content to keep his charge well away from the speed.
Lander Doller dropped off Makes Cents turning for home and looked to have a winning break.
But when he started to feel the pinch 100 metres from home the back markers started to chime in and nothing finished better than Jakcorijim that forged to the lead 50 metres out and he went on to win by over a length from Our Casanova with Lander Dollar hanging on for third a long neck away.
He paid $4.70 with UBET Tote but got out to $6 with UBET’s fixed odds which was a luxury price for such a talented sprinter.
Jackorijim had not started for a month and looked in need of the hit-out but the gelding’s incredible will to win is something that can never be underestimated.
Jackorijim has won 12 of his 56 starts but he also has accrued 24 minor placings for over $250,000 in stakes.
