Clifford eyes double with small team

TRAINER Jason Clifford will take a team of seven to the meeting at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart tomorrow (Tuesday) and he is quietly confident of emerging with at least two winners.

He has three runners in each of the open handicap and 0-66 handicap both over 1550 metres and he also will saddle up Speedy Ceed in the opening race the 3YO and Up maiden over 1400 metres.

Speedy Ceed had shown nothing on the training track or in trials, which led to Clifford declaring the horse could be on his way out of the stable prior to him running at Tattersall’s Park two weeks ago.

But the gelding produced an eye-catching run to finish on the heels of the placegetters in a modest maiden two weeks ago to suggest he may be one of those horses that only produces on race days.

Clifford’s stable star Milochello looks to have the edge over his stablemates Cosmic Choice and Devils Quest in the Raine & Horne Open Handicap (race 5) but the trainer says Cosmic Choice could provide decent testing material if she can run out a strong 1550m.

Devils Quest is a get-back-get-home type and the inside grass track won’t suit his racing style but Clifford says he will still be competitive if he can be ridden closer to the pace.

His contenders in the 0-66 handicap (race six) are Blue Bud, Prom King and La Ha and all have winning chances based on their recent exposed form.
