In Brief
- North Hobart Bowls & Community Club win $10,000.
- The club ecstatic with the result.
- Car Park upgrades on the cards.
A crackle of cockatoos was running rampant in Hobart on Cup Day, as the North Hobart Bowls & Community Club won $10,000 as part of the second leg of the 2025 Ladbrokes Community Sports Series (LCSS).
The Bowls Club, affectionately known as the Cockatoos, let out a rousing rendition of their club song after Ozturk’s victory in the sixth race on a brilliant day of racing.
Ozturk, the $3.10 favourite, landed in a forward spot outside the leader Hububbajahn ($4.20). That pair finished as the quinella, albeit with Ozturk storming away for a 2.5-length victory.
“We’re just thrilled with the result,” said club representative Gary Rumbold.
“We’ve got fewer than 40 members at the club; every cent matters so much, and we can hardly believe we’ve won the $10,000 today.”
Though they might not have a huge member base, the Cockatoos were out in force on Hobart Cup Day, relishing the opportunity to be in the running for the grand prize.

14 Southern-based sporting clubs had a great time at 2025 Hobart Cup Day.
“We’ve had a brilliant day at the races here today, just mingling with the other clubs, and now with this result, the rest of the day will be even sweeter,” Rumbold said.
A full field of 14 faced the starter for Sunday’s designated LCSS race, a maiden/class 1 over 1600m. It was the North Hobart Club that took the grand prize, but every club walked away with at least $500, along with 10 tickets in a prime location for Cup Day.
Situated immediately behind the North Hobart Football Oval, Rumbold said the $10,000 will be put towards car park upgrades that have been postponed due to a lack of funds.
Ozturk’s winning trainer Stephen Shaw, also had a suggestion for some of the winning prize.
“I hope they buy me a beer then, as I’m partial to an ale. Good luck to them; it’s a great initiative.”
The final leg of the 2025 LCSS will be in Launceston on Cup Day (26 February), where 14 northern sporting clubs will share over $25,000 in prizes.
