Damek on the mend

BOOM Tasmanian dog Damek will remain in Victoria for another fortnight as part of a recovery process from an injury aggravated at his most recent outing at The Meadows last Saturday week.

Damek hit the running rail at the first turn in a heat of a grade five series at Sandown last month but still managed to finish a close-up second.

He was checked out and cleared to resume racing before lining up just over a week later in a heat of a similar series at The Meadows.

He led in that race but was the first beaten and tailed out to finish last and almost 10 lengths from the winner.

One of the dog’s owner-breeders June Phillips said an injury has been identified and it needs to be treated prior to the dog returning to Tasmania.

“The injury isn’t anything major but enough to warrant treatment over a period of a couple of weeks,” Philips said.

“We expect to have him home in Tasmania towards the end of the month and he should be back racing soon after,” she said.
