SMART sprinter Dash For Magic earned free entry into the the $90,000 Newmarket Handicap with an impressive win in the On Horizons Goodwood Handicap run under quality handicap conditions over 1100 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart today.
Dash Fort Magic was ridden superbly by Lee Smith to emerge triumphant over Western Wager and the well backed favourite Punctuate.
It was jockey Lee Smith’s first winner for the season but it will definitely be one he’ll remember for other reasons, as it was more the quality of the ride that paved the way for victory.
Dash For Magic was last season touted by trainer Vicki Rhind as a horse that could develop into a top line sprinter and on this latest effort she could be right.
The gelded four-year-old son of Dash For Cash settled fourth and just off a hot speed and when Smith called on the gelding for the big effort in the home straight he responded magnificently.
The race offered ballot-free entry into the Newmarket Handicap and Rhind said she would take up the option.
The Newmarket Handicap will be run over 1200 metres under lights in Launceston on Wednesday, November 23
