NOVICE harness racing trainer Clayton Miller is predicting a bright future for his lightly raced three-year-old Daytona Demon following the gelding’s impressive all-the-way victory at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on Sunday night.
Daytona Demon (Dawn Of A New Day-Melinda Gee) was having only his second start but showed some traits of a seasoned professional.
Daytona Demon showed good gate speed to lead without being bustled and once in front driver John Walters ensured a solid pace.
He slipped four metres clear turning for home and then had no trouble staving off a determined challenge from eventual runner-up Diamonds Are Magic.
He recorded a mile rate of 2m.01.10s and ran home his last half (800m) in a slick 58.6s.
Miller was thrilled with the win and said the gelding has always shown ability.
“I thought his debut run at Devonport was full of merit because it was a big learning curve for him and he got to the line better than we expected,” Miller said.
