THE juvenile division of the GOTBAT series often throws up a potential star and that could be the case with the winner of this year’s series final at UBET Park Hobart last Thursday night.
Despicable Scott delivered an outstanding performance to win the final coming from third and many lengths off the lead turning for home.
His kennel mate Despicable Charl flew the lids from box two to lead while Celtic Kid settled second from box eight with Despicable Scott eventually getting into third spot as they closed in on the home turn.
Despicable Charl forged clear at the top of the home straight and was being hailed the winner but Despicable Scott darted back to the rail and ran on powerfully to grab his kennel mare in the last few strides.
Despicable Scott defeated despicable Charl by a half-length with Celtic Kid a distant third ahead of Bring Sexy Back that made up good ground late.
“This pup has always shown above average ability but he is a very keen railer and box six was the only doubt in my mind about him winning the final,” Pursell said.
“But once he got through the pack and was in clear racing room I thought he’d be a good chance of running Despicable Charl down.”
“Despicable Charl has been the surprise packet because he was the lesser light of the four finalists before this series but he might yet make the grade,” he said.
The winner and runner-up are owned by Mitchell Pryce and Sarah Easey who have been sending dogs to Pursell for a couple of years.
