Penguin greyhound trainer Butch Deverell made it two feature-race wins in less than 24 hours when outsider Kalaway Crusty won the Betfair Classic final at Devonport on Tuesday.
On Monday night, Deverell took out the $20,000 Illingworth Classic final in Launceston with Kalaway Crusty’s litter brother Kalaway Ernie.
Kalaway Crusty, starting $9 fixed-odds with Tattsbet, scored a runaway seven-length win over first reserve Mega Nitro ($31) with another outsider Locknane Wally ($21) almost a length away third.
Three dogs dominated the market, with Dirty Rich ($2.75) the favourite ahead of Loving Lucy ($3.50) and Shanlyn Vapour ($4.60) but none of them figured in the finish of a race marred by interference.
Kalaway Crusty avoided all the trouble before storming home to record his fourth win in 19 starts.
Deverell said that he hadn’t been confident of winning the race as it was a strong field and Kalaway Crusty lacked early speed.
“But the luck fell his way and he was able to get up on the rail, hit the front and run to the line well,” the trainer said.
