TRAINER Butch Deverell has made no secret of the fact that he regards Big Moose the best dog he has ever placed in a box.
But he also has great admiration for any dog that shows courage while in his care and Big Moose’s litter brother Akka Boy falls into that category.
Akka Boy gave his rivals a galloping lesson in the Betfair Distance Championship final over 580 metres at Devonport last week.
The nearing three-year-old jumped well from box two to find the lead and he was never headed.
Akka Boy held out determined challenges at the business end of the race and eventually went on to score by almost five lengths from Mighty Mu with the favourite Thirteen Black two lengths astern.
While the race carried little prestige, it was special for Deverell given the dog was in a bad way six months earlier with a serious foot injury.
“When they come back from an injury like he had and win races like that it really is special,” Deverell said.
“Akka Boy has been racing extra well of late and this win was probably one of his best this time in” he said.
Akka Boy has won 34 and notched 27 minor placings from 90 starts for about $84,000 in stakes.
