STAR Tasmanian two-year-old Gee Gee Double Dee defied a torrid run in transit to emerge triumphant in the $100,000 Listed Elwick Stakes over 1100m at UBET Park Hobart today to keep her unbeaten record intact.

Gee Gee Double Dee was buffeted by Little Elsa on her outside for the first 600 metres before forging clear in the home straight and then she staved off a determined challenge from the highly promising Mariah’s Magic from the John Blacker stable.

Gee Gee Double Dee’s rider Siggy Carr described the half-length win as “courageous”.

“The horse on our outside did her up pretty good and my filly hit the inside fence twice so given what’s happed throughout the race I’d say another other horse would have been beaten,” Carr said.

A stewards’ inquiry post race resulted in the rider of Little Elsa, Rhonda Mangan, being suspended for five race meetings on a careless riding charge.

Trainer Leon Wells was concerned when his filly returned to the unsaddling enclosure favouring her nearside foreleg but after inspection he said it didn’t loom to be anything serious.

“She copped a bump on her leg but we’ll just pop a bandage on it tonight and see how she is in the morning but it doesn’t look serious,” Wells said.
