LONGFORD trainer Peter Luttrell recently trimmed his numbers down to a small team of five so to snare a double at the Launceston meeting last night was quite an achievement.

Luttrell won with Mygreyhorse and Geegee’s Clang that had both produced a string of minor placings before finally breaking their maiden status.

Both were short-priced favourites, although a scratching at the barrier of odds-on favourite Sh’bourne Bel in Mygreyhorse’s race led to that horse’s price being crunched.

Mygreyhorse raced close to the lead to the home turn where jockey Ismail Toker gave the six-year-old grey gelding more rein and he eventually ground down Geegee Hot Novel to win by a long neck.

“This grey horse has been a bit unlucky not to win before now,” Luttrell said.

“he’s copped a few wide draws and he’s missed the start a couple of times.”

“There have been some hiccups along the way so it’s good to see him finally crack it,” he said.

Geegee’s Clang also had been unlucky with five seconds before finally breaking through.

“Geegee’s Clang has been narrowly beaten a couple of times so he deserved to break through,” Luttrell said.

“He’s not pretty to look at and he’s a chronic wind sucker but he’s a lovely natured horse – a real gentleman,” he said.

Both of Luttrell’s winners were ridden by in-form apprentice Ismail Toker who rode three of the first four winners on the card and he was placed aboard another.

Mygreyhorse is owned by the trainer’s wife Debbie Luttrell while Geegee’s Clang is owned by the state’s leading owners Paul and Elizabeth Geard.

The trainer said he also has a very nice unnamed two-year-old filly by Wordsmith that is showing a lot of promise.
