WELL BRED three-year-old filly Downwind (Charge Forward-Spinnaker) gave notice that she might have a bright future in Tasmania with a bold maiden win over 1100 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart today.
With in-form apprentice Siggy Carr aboard, Downwind produced a barnstorming finish to score comfortably from Flying Verdict and West Cardiff with the heavily backed $1.30 favourite Silandro fading into fourth spot.
Downwind was having her first start in the state for trainers Charlie Goggin and Luella Meaburn. The filly has only been in their care for two months having come from New South Wales where she was at Kris Lees’ pre-training centre.
The filly had two preparations last season with Lees for two inglorious performances so her owner Bruce Neill opted to send her to Tasmania.
“She is a very nice filly and I liked her from the moment she stepped onto our property at Runnymede,” said trainer Charlie Goggin.
“She’s only been with us a couple of months but she was quite forward when she arrived and after her trial in Hobart recently we were quietly confident she would do well today.”
“Siggy (Carr) rode the filly in her trial and when she got off she was more than pleased with her effort,” Goggin said.
Despite the confidence by connections Downwind eased in the market to start at the luxury price of $27.
