PROMINENT owners Jamie Cockshutt and Barry Cooper have enjoyed their fair share of winners over the years and their latest investment Drifting West looks set to keep the wins rolling in.
They purchased Drifting West from the gelding’s breeders Denis and Ruth Mahoney for an undisclosed sum about a month ago and in Hobart tonight (Sunday) the gelded son of Modern Art-Ark Drifter made it two wins from as many starts for his new owners.
Drifting West (Ricky Duggan) was allowed to settle near the rear in a small field of seven while the Michael Laugher-trained Turnpike Cruiser (Rohan Hillier) led and set a solid tempo.
The field packed nearing the home turn the last time and that’s when Duggan called on Drifting West to extend.
The gelding responded magnificently to forge to the front and he then staved off a determined challenge from quality mare Benediction.
It was a narrow win with the margin only a nose but it was still testament to the horse’s courage as it was only his second start since June.
