While Gareth Rattray closes in on 1,000 winners, a New Norfolk driver who has driven 339 more winners than Rattray is doing his best to keep a good margin between them. Ricky Duggan drove a double at Devonport on Sunday night behind Queens Advocate and Springfield Tattoo then went one better at Hobart on Monday night with a treble.

The Hobart meeting was conducted by the New Norfrolk Pacing Club, where Duggan is President, and his winners were Angela De Marco, Something Eyre and All About Alice.

Angela De Marco found the lead early and won easily to bring up a training double for Tony Petersen, who also trained Gosh Heza Rebel (Adrian Collins) to win the Derwent Valley Council Stakes.

Something Eyre was back in the winners circle courtesy of a copy book drive from Duggan. The 4YO stallion was second up from a five month break and took his winning strike rate to better than 50% with seven wins and three placing’s from 12 starts. Duggan completed the treble with All About Alice. The Chester Bullock trained 5YO mare did it the tough way sitting three wide for the last 1000 metres but Duggan, as usual, knew exactly what he was doing and the pair sprinted clear in the straight.

Mojo Major was having his first Tasmanian start in the Tastech Building Systems Sires Produce Prelude. The 3YO Victorian colt, now trained and driven by Rodney Ashwood, was far too classy for the locals and bolted clear to win by 19 metres in a 58.1 last half for a 2:01.2 mile rate (2090 metres). Mojo Major is likely to be one of the favourites for the $30,000 Tasmanian Derby at Hobart on 22 March.

Mountain Safari won her first race in the Christine Butler Memorial for C0 pacers. The 4YO Safari – Collarate mare was a late starter to racing debuting at Burnie in January this year. After three unplaced runs, Mountain Safari broke through at Hobart on Monday night for Barrie and Todd Rattray and Central Highlands owner/breeder Irene Glover.
