WHEN well bred dog Elle Don won on debut at Devonport in February his trainer Russell Watts predicted a bright future for the son of Cosmic Rumble.

But after his subsequent outing three weeks later in a juvenile event over 461 metres in Hobart the pundits were raving about the Russell Watts-trained pup.

At his second outing he missed the start and was still last on the home turn but somehow managed to weave a passage through the field and go on and score comfortably.

But after two unsuccessful attempts in Launceston, the latest ending in injuries to both his front stopper bones, Watts was forced to give the youngster a decent spell.

Elle Don resumed with en eye-catching third in Hobart last Thursday night but anyone who witnessed the dog’s win at Devonport yesterday (Tuesday) would have immediately etched his name into their little black books.

He missed the start and was dragged back to last from the inside alley.

But he manoeuvred his way through the field and on the home turn he switched to the outside of the leader and went on to win by four lengths from Julia Fly’s with Merrick Pines a distant third.

“It was a very good win but that’s just the way he races,” Watts said.

“He is injury prone so he is still very much a day-to-day proposition,” Watts said.

Elle Don was bred by Peter Bohan from his broodbitch Ace Zace and the dog is raced in partnership by Bohan and his daughter Mary Yates.

Bohan has bred another litter from Ace Zace by Spring Gun and they are not too far away from being broken in.

Elle Don is the only one of five from his litter to make it to the races.

Watts said he would have his next start in Hobart on July 31.
