SPREYTON trainer Leon Wells teamed up with his former star apprentice Craig Newitt to win with promising three-year-old Esca that blitzed his rivals in The Advocate Maiden over 1150 metres at Tapeta Park today.
Despite being caught four-wide from his wide barrier for the first 600 metres Newitt still had a good hold on the lightly raced gelding turning for home.
When he called on the son of West Quest-Leanamaree to extend in the straight he burst clear and went on to win comfortably, scoring by 2-1/2 lengths from Cheerful Gee Gee with General Gee Gee a length away third.
It was only Esca’s second start but he put the writing on the wall on debut when a game third on his home rack in mid December.
