BRIGHTON trainer Terry Evans produced a master training stroke with his three-year-old Da Ponte that notched his maiden win at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart today.
Da Ponte had been racing over longer trips with his previous outing being over 2100m.
He was dropping back to a 1200-metre event and while the opposition wasn’t full of stars it was the way the gelding went about winning and suggested he might yet go on and realise his fill potential.
BulletKingdom ($7) led while jockey Shuji Amano had Da Ponte settled three back the fence and travelling comfortably to the home turn.
Laurenstar ($3.30) loomed to win in the home straight and the well-backed favourite Ordain ($2) joined in 200m out but Da Ponte ($9.20 into $6.70) gathered momentum and rallied strongly to get the judges decision by a narrow margin from Ordain with Laurenstar third just ahead of Bullet Kingdom.
