In Brief
- Fitzwilliam a strong chance in race two.
- Good first-up record for 4YO.
- Moss 'N' Bolt can atone late in the day.
Eggs ‘n‘ bacon and Fitzwilliam appeal as menu favourites for punters with an early start to Sunday’s Devonport race meeting.
A big 10-race card gets underway at 10:35 and with Fitzwilliam looking the best bet of the day in race two, punters could have their pockets lined before breakfast has fully digested.
The Stuart Gandy-trained galloper hasn’t started since early March but tuned up for his race return with an easy trial win in Hobart last month.
“He’s going really good, it’s a limited race being a 0-60, he’s in the right race for him that’s for sure,” the trainer said.
Fitzwilliam looks ideally suited in barrier three, jockey Siggy Carr should be able to have the 4YO either leading or just off the pace.
Fitzwilliam has twice started on the synthetic surface and won over Sunday’s trip when resuming at the track in November last year.
Gandy has six horses engaged in Devonport and while Fitzwilliam should get the stable off on the right foot, he also has strong chances in later races.
Gee Gees Magic Man looks a leading contender in the fifth a Maiden/Class 1 over 1880m.
Gee Gees Punter is third-up from a break and will be hard to beat in a 1350m Class 1, while Gee Gee Redhead has a winning chance in what is a strong 1150m Class 1.
“The fields are really strong and there’s really good young horses coming through as well and it’s really competitive racing, but I thought her last start was super.
“She did miss a little bit of work after that run but if she goes around on Sunday, she should go close again.”
With the Brighton track closed for much of the week, Gandy has been forced to use alternate training methods such as a treadmill or the beach but is confident his team is in good shape for the trip north.
Another good bet on the program looks to be Moss ‘N’ Bolt in the BM60.
Moss ‘N’ Bolt was having his first Tasmanian run when an unlucky third in a similar race four weeks ago and the Ken and Tanya Hanson-trained gelding should make amends for punters who heavily backed him last run.
The 7Y0 has trialled since that run finishing just four lengths behind Mystic Journey.
All 10 races will be on Sky Racing 1 and TasracingTV.
