WELL bred two-year-old Gee Gee Double Dee confirmed her status as the state’s best when she scored an emphatic win in the $30,000 Ensign Lodge Alfa Bowl over 1100 metres under lights in Launceston.

Gee Gee Double Dee started at $1.10 and delivered a performance that warranted such a short price with this latest win paving the way for her next targets during the Betfair Exchange Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival next month.

The Leon Wells-trained filly had won at her only two starts in Hobart over 900 metres but was stepping up significantly in distance, drew a wide barrier and was racing on a strange track and under lights for the first time.

But none of those factors had an effect on the eventual outcome.

The filly began well and had no trouble finding the lead and rider Craig Newitt took hold and she held sway over Sameron to the home turn.

But when Newitt allowed her more rein she sprinted clear and went on to score comfortably from Zatacla with Starity Miss third.

“This filly is really special and while she has won this easily I know that there is so much more to come from her and that’s scary,” Wells said.

“She was in this race so that she had experience here in Launceston for when she comes back for the $100,000 Gold Sovereign next month but first she will tackle the Elwick Stakes (also worth $100,000) ,” he said.

Newitt was upbeat about the filly’s performance.

“This filly is very much ‘push button’ and while I had to give her a little shake-up turning for home she pretty much toyed with them and there was a lot left in the tank,” Newitt said.

“Whatever comes from interstate for the major two-year-old races during the carnival would want to be well above average to trouble her,” he said.
