TOP thoroughbred trainer Leon Wells has prepared so many winners he has lost count but one of some significance saluted at UBET Park Hobart on Sunday.
Wells prepared Gee Gees Supreme to win a 2YO and upwards maiden over 1200 metres and while the horse is no star and it was in a lowly maiden it was his first winner as a southern-based trainer.
He and his wife Maree recently relocated to Hobart to establish a satellite stable at Brighton while his eldest son and training partner Dean Wells remains on the North-West Coast to look after the home base stable at Spreyton.
Wells was encouraged to relocate by prominent owners Paul and Elizabeth Geard who had to secure another trainer for many of their horses when John Luttrell was outed for six months over a positive swab.
Luttrell has appealed against the charge and penalty but the appeal won’t be heard until the end of the month.
Wells was upbeat about the win of Gee Gees Supreme and explained how the training operation will work.
He also revealed that his other son and former talented jumps jockey Troy would be joining the training partnership from August 1.
