IF Brighton trainer Stuart Gandy thought winning the Devonport Cup with his star mare Geegees Goldengirl was special he didn’t have to wait long for the excitement to be topped.
Gandy’s brilliant sprinter Geegees Doublejay was sent out the odds-on favourite to win the race after the Cup, the Quality Sprint over 1150 metres but it was what happened just after the start that made the win phenomenal.
When the gates opened Geegees Doublejay’s saddle slipped back and rolled over to the near side leaving rider Siggy Car to do little but keep a firm grip on the reins to try and stay balanced.
The gelding eventually found the lead but he was kept company to the home turn by outsider Baldez while the well-backed challengers Tennessee Drive and Meconsul were jostling to find clear racing room to mount their challenges.
But Geegees Doublejay was only toying with his rivals and went on to easily account for Erin’s Element and Tennessee Drive with outsider Vandermeer a game fourth.
