A split-second decision by apprentice Siggy Carr to lead on classy mare Geegees Goldengirl proved to be a winning formula that carried her to victory in the $100,000 Simons Deign Centre Devonport Cup at Spreyton today.
Geegees Goldengirl showed great courage to stave off late challenges from Victorian gelding Eximius that was a half-length from the winner with Dream Roller over a length away third.
The winner is owned by Paul and Elizabeth Geard who have a racing and breeding enterprise comprising over 160 horses and it was their first success in the race.
Geegees Goldengirl’s trainer Stuart Gandy said the mare will now progress to the Hobart and Launceston Cups and he is hoping she can make it a clean sweep of the state’s feature cups during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.
