LAST start winner Geegees Soprano will be aiming to extend his winning record on the Launceston track tonight when he steps out in a strong class four event over 1200 metres (Race 5).
Geegees Soprano has won three of his past four start with his latest victory very impressive in a benchmark 62 handicap over 1200m carrying 58kg two weeks ago with 3kg claiming apprentice Boris Thornton aboard.
Thornton retains the ride tonight and the Stuart Gandy-trained gelding will carry only 55 kilograms but it is a much tougher assignment.
Geegees Soprano meets two last-start winners in Vandermeer and the talented mare Frolicked and they should offer tough opposition.
Vandermeer was very impressive in winning first-up over 1200m three weeks ago and his trainer said the secret to the five-year-old is to keep him fresh and race him no less than three weeks apart so this race falls nicely into their race plan.
The same applies to Frolicked and her trainers Graeme McCulloch and David Keating penciled this race in for her the day after she won first-up in a BM62 handicap over 1220m a month ago.
The John Blacker-trained Our Casanova is coming off a two-day back-up as he ran fourth in an open handicap on the synthetic at Spreyton on Monday so if he has fully recovered from his latest outing he too will be competitive.
