Talented four-year-old mare Geegees Velvet returned to a more suitable journey to emerge triumphant in a benchmark 72 event over 1400 metres.
With top apprentice Siggy Carr aboard, the John Luttrell-trained mare settled just off the speed and when Carr took her to the outside to make her charge she responded magnificently and went on to defeat Up Cups that came from well back with Hell Strong also coming from last on the corner for an eye-catching third.
It was the mare’s first win this season but that was mostly due to connections having her in staying events that didn’t suit this time around.
The mare was very competitive in staying events last year against her own age running second in the Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) and third in the Strut Stakes and Hobart Guineas both over 2100m.
Listen to what trainer John Luttrell and jockey Siggy Carr had to say about Geegees Velvet’s win.
