WELL bred mare Speedie Genie made up for recent luckless minor placings when she stormed home to win the Boag’s Premium Maiden/Class 1 Handicap over 1660m at Devonport today.
With talented Victorian apprentice Talia Rodder in the saddle, Speedie Genie settled worse than midfield before making her move 650m from home.
Alberts Son assumed control from Gessler at the top of the home straight with Lovely Darts and the well-backed favourite Uboa ($2.90) hot in pursuit.
Speedie Genie was taken to the outside by Rodder and she flashed home to grab victory over Alberts Son and Uboa in the shadows of the post.
Speedie Genie was coming off a second to stablemate Luzambo in Launceston last Thursday week in which she came from near last on the turn to fail by a narrow margin.
The Gary White-trained four-year-old mare promised a lot early in her career but her form waned and she then lost confidence.
But her form this preparation suggests White has managed to get the mare’s head right and he also has deduced she has no liking for badly rain-affected going.
“I made a mistake two starts back by running her on a heavy track here at Devonport after she ran a really good fourth in Launceston,” White said.
“Last start she flashed home from well back to run second to Luzambo and that was a very good effort so we were quietly confident of success today,” White said.
