LAUNCESTON Cup winner Genuine Lad proved beyond doubt he is worthy of a place in the Listed Mornington Cup field with a brilliant win in an open handicap at The TOTE Racing Centre in Launceston last night carrying the huge weight of 62.5 kilograms.
After coming off a decisive win in the Group 3 Betfair Launceston Cup the Bill Ryan-trained gelding had to lug a hefty impost over 2100m but the gelded son of Ladoni made light of the task to score comfortably from Payteevee with Deux Foix third and just in advance of rank outsider Settler’s Joy.
Genuine Lad is set to tackle the Mornington Cup on March 28 and Ryan was thrilled with the way his stable star handled the big weight.
Payteevee ($6.40) led and jockey David Pires set a solid pace while Brendon McCoull was content to sit just off the speed to the home turn.
When he asked Genuine Lad ($2.80) for the supreme effort in the home straight the four-year-old gelding knuckled down to his task and went on to score by over a length.
The favourite At The Weekend ($2.30) failed to run on and faded over the concluding stages to finish fifth.
